Born in Augusta, Kansas, Isabelle Schrock Barnett moved to California with her family at the age of five and graduated from the the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1923. She subsequently studied with Frederick Taubes and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Robert Kaess studied at the University of California under Margaret Petersen and Erle Loran, receiving his B.F.A. in 1948 and M.F.A. in 1950. He traveled in Europe from 1952-3 to continue his art studies and paint. In the late 1950's, he developed an allergy to oil paint and, not caring to paint in another medium, he returned to the University of California at Berkeley to study medicine. After graduation, Robert Kaess practiced medicine for almost thirty years but, in his short and successful career as an artist, he painted many fine and original paintings.
