About the Item

A captivating early 20th-century Western mountain landscape by Colorado artist Elsie Haddon Haynes (1884–1963), this original oil pastel drawing captures the charming town of Silver Plume nestled in the Colorado Rockies. Rendered in a vivid autumn palette of gold, amber, ochre, forest green, sky blue, rich brown, and soft neutrals, the scene features iconic elements of the Western landscape: rugged peaks, colorful aspen and pine trees, a winding river, and rustic mountain homes. Executed in pastel on paper and signed lower right, the work is beautifully preserved under UV-protective glass and presented in a vintage frame using all archival materials. Framed dimensions measure 21 ¼ x 24 ½ x ¾ inches; sight size is 12 ¾ x 16 ½ inches. Provenance: Private Collection, Denver, Colorado About the Artist: Born on the Isle of Wight, British-American artist Elsie Haddon Haynes was classically trained in England, Belgium, and Paris before immigrating to the United States after World War I. She settled in Denver, Colorado, where she became a prominent figure in the regional art scene. A founding member of the Denver Artists' Guild, Haynes was known for her expressive landscape work inspired by the American West. Her travels took her across California, Arizona, South Dakota, and Colorado, capturing dramatic vistas with sensitivity and style. One of her paintings, depicting South Boulder Canyon, was selected as a gift to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a known admirer of the Rocky Mountains. Haynes's landscapes are celebrated for their luminous color, graceful composition, and heartfelt connection to the rugged beauty of the Western terrain.
