About the Item

Title: et of Five Miniature Watercolors of The Matthew and Early Steamships by Jack Grunwell, 20th century British artist Medium: Watercolor on thin card, unframed Measurements (each): Approx. between: 2.75 inches (height) x 2 inches (width) and 1.75 inches (height) x 2.25 inches (width) Condition: Very good and highly presentable Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work in Bristol, England. Description: This striking set of five miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell explores the legacy of Bristol's maritime heritage, with special attention to The Matthew—the 15th-century caravel famously used by John Cabot to sail from Bristol to Newfoundland in 1497. The Matthew, 1497 – A richly detailed painting of the original caravel under full sail, capturing the early age of exploration with warm earth tones and a sweeping sky. John Cabot’s voyage aboard The Matthew marked one of the earliest European landfalls in North America. Replica Matthew, 1997 – Built in Bristol to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Cabot’s voyage, the replica ship completed the same transatlantic crossing. This piece depicts the replica vessel in motion, with proud red flags flying against a calm sea and bright sky. 3–4. 19th-Century Paddle Steamers and Early Steamships – Two companion pieces depict hybrid sailing ships and paddle steamers typical of the early 1800s. With red pennants flying and smoke trailing from funnels, these vessels mark the transition from sail to steam in British naval design. Steam-Assisted Clipper at Sea – A larger vessel with sails billowing and a prominent central smokestack, possibly inspired by the SS Great Britain or similar Atlantic-crossing ships. The scene conveys power, precision, and a sense of maritime progress. These works collectively illustrate the dramatic evolution of seafaring—from wooden exploration ships to steam-powered industrial might—while paying homage to Bristol's vital role in maritime history. A perfect set for collectors of naval art, exploration history, or Bristol-themed miniatures.
