Description:
This characterful watercolor by Jack Grunwell captures the Llandoger Trow Inn, one of Bristol’s most iconic and storied pubs, located near the city’s historic harbourside. Built in 1664, the timber-framed building has long been associated with maritime history and folklore, said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and once frequented by pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard.
Grunwell paints a lively harbourside scene with smoke rising from barrels, horses and carts, dockworkers, and historic sailing ships, reinforcing the area’s seafaring and trading past. The distinctive gabled roofs and leaded windows of the Llandoger Trow are faithfully rendered, while the bustling figures in period attire give life and warmth to the scene.
