This evocative watercolor painting by Jack Grunwell captures two of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s most revolutionary ships, the Great Western and Great Britain, pioneers of 19th-century maritime engineering.
The Great Western (top), launched in 1837, was the first purpose-built transatlantic steamship, revolutionizing travel between Britain and America.
The Great Britain (bottom), launched in 1843, was the world’s first iron-hulled, propeller-driven ocean liner, a marvel of engineering that remains one of Bristol’s most treasured historical ships today.
Grunwell’s artwork depicts both vessels at sea, their smokestacks billowing steam, sails filled with wind, and flags flying, evoking the power and grandeur of these iconic ships.
