Jack Grunwell
Historic Miniature Watercolor of Temple Church and Shakespeare Inn in Bristol

About the Item

Title: Historic Miniature Watercolor of Temple Church and Shakespeare Inn in Bristol by Jack Grunwell, 20th century British artist Medium: Watercolor on thin card, unframed Measurements: 3.5 inches (height) x 2.5 inches (width) Condition: Very good and highly presentable Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work in Bristol, England. Description: This expressive watercolour by Jack Grunwell depicts two of Bristol’s most iconic historic buildings: the Shakespeare Inn and the adjacent Temple Church. The half-timbered black-and-white façade of the inn takes centre stage, with its overhanging gables and red banner, while the towering, war-damaged bell tower of Temple Church rises dramatically behind. The Shakespeare Inn, a classic Tudor-style pub, is one of the few remaining timber-framed buildings in central Bristol. Temple Church, originally built by the Knights Templar, dates back to the 12th century and is renowned for its distinctive leaning tower. It was heavily damaged during the Bristol Blitz of World War II and now stands as a haunting memorial ruin. This painting captures the layered history of the city—medieval origins, Tudor life, and wartime scars—within one compelling composition. A must-have for collectors of Bristol history, Tudor architecture, or those drawn to heritage landmarks and preservation stories.
