About the Item

Title: Historic Miniature Watercolor of Wickham Court Bristol 1645 Meeting Site by Jack Grunwell, 20th century British artist Medium: Watercolor on thin card, unframed Measurements: 2.5 inches (height) x 3.75 inches (width) Condition: Very good and highly presentable Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work in Bristol, England. Description: This evocative watercolour by Jack Grunwell captures Wickham Court in Bristol, a building of major historical importance. As the artist notes in his accompanying handwritten inscription, this site was the venue for discussions between Oliver Cromwell and General Fairfax in 1645 during the English Civil War. The meeting held at Wickham Court was a Council of War, which led to the defeat of the Royalist Cavaliers and the Parliamentarian entry into Bristol via Lawford's Gate. It marked a crucial turning point in the war and the eventual fall of Bristol, a strategic Royalist stronghold. Grunwell’s painting shows the sturdy 17th-century architecture of the court building, with modest figures suggesting the tense, pivotal moment in time. A rare find for collectors of Civil War history, Bristol heritage, or those interested in English political and military narratives through art.
