Description:
This exquisite double composition by Jack Grunwell presents two complementary views of Wells Cathedral, one of England’s most celebrated ecclesiastical sites. The top image captures the Vicars’ Close, the oldest residential street in Europe still in use, leading toward the cathedral’s grand towers. The lower painting features the Chain Gate, a historic elevated walkway that connects the cathedral with the Chapter House, allowing clergy to move between buildings in privacy.
Located in the medieval city of Wells in Somerset, Wells Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and is known for its distinctive Gothic façade, scissor arches, and beautifully preserved chapter buildings. The Vicars’ Close, lined with stone cottages and chimneys, was built to house the cathedral’s choir in the 14th century and remains one of the most picturesque streets in Britain.
Together, these paintings capture the architectural harmony and historical depth of Wells, making this piece ideal for collectors of Gothic architecture, British cathedral cities, or Somerset landscapes. Grunwell’s style balances quiet atmosphere with architectural precision.
