Description:
This delightful pair of miniature watercolours by Jack Grunwell captures two of the most historic and visually striking gateways to the ancient city of York: Bootham Bar and Micklegate Bar.
On the left, Bootham Bar is seen with the iconic York Minster rising dramatically behind it. The bar, which incorporates Roman stonework, has stood as a fortified entrance to the city since medieval times. The inclusion of horse riders and distant figures adds a lively, almost Regency-era charm to the scene.
To the right, Micklegate Bar is portrayed with its distinctive twin towers and battlements. Historically, this was the main ceremonial entrance to the city, where monarchs would enter York. Grunwell has animated the foreground with townspeople and carriages, capturing the spirit of a bustling day in centuries past.
Both compositions showcase York’s unique blend of Gothic architecture and medieval defences. These works would be ideal for collectors of English cityscapes, York-related ephemera, or historical architecture in miniature form.
