About the Item

Title: Set of Five Miniature Maritime Watercolors of Bristol Ships and Redcliffe by Jack Grunwell, 20th century British artist Medium: Watercolor on thin card, unframed Measurements (each): Approx. between: 3.75 inches (height) x 2.25 inches (width) and 2 inches (height) x 3 inches (width) Condition: Very good and highly presentable Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work in Bristol, England. Description: This compelling set of five miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell explores the maritime identity of Bristol and its surrounding harbour. From 15th-century voyages of exploration to 18th-century merchant and slave ships, Grunwell’s pieces capture the movement, power, and sometimes controversial past of this historic port city. The Matthew off France, 1497 – Depicts John Cabot’s legendary ship The Matthew, which set sail from Bristol to North America in 1497. Shown in full sail against a glowing horizon, this piece celebrates a pivotal moment in early British exploration. 2–3. Redcliffe Harbourside Views (Pair) – Featuring the towering spire of St Mary Redcliffe, these companion miniatures show the dense masts of ships crowding the docks, evoking Bristol’s industrial and maritime heyday. The prominent use of vertical lines draws the eye skyward toward the historic spire. Merchant Ship in Bristol Harbour with Cathedral – A dramatic view of a tall ship docked in the harbour, with Bristol Cathedral seen in the background. The inclusion of rowing figures in the foreground enhances the sense of movement and working life. The Nymph, Slave Trader, 1720 – A powerful depiction of a fully rigged merchant ship, likely referencing Bristol’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. The ship's title nods to a real or representative vessel active during the 18th century. This painting offers a sobering yet historically significant portrayal of Bristol’s economic past. Unlabelled ship at sea (possibly Bristol bound) – A dark-hulled ship navigating open waters with full sails unfurled. Likely inspired by 18th–19th century trading vessels, it fits stylistically with the broader set and adds dynamic contrast. Together, these paintings offer a layered and visually engaging representation of Bristol’s harbour history—from glory and growth to reflection and reckoning. Perfect for collectors of maritime art, British exploration, and historic seaport cityscapes.
