Description: This characterful set of five miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell captures some of Bristol’s most iconic timber-framed buildings and historic inns, rendered in his distinctive period style. These locations reflect the city’s Tudor and early modern architecture, full of charm and rich in local lore. Old Market, Bristol – A picturesque view of half-timbered merchant buildings in the Old Market area, a bustling historic trading hub once located just outside the medieval city walls. The Hatchet Inn (16th Century) – Bristol’s oldest surviving pub, dating back to circa 1606. Steeped in folklore and once frequented by sailors and dockworkers, this inn remains a treasured part of the city’s pub heritage. 3–5. Unlabelled but historically inspired street scenes – These three pieces depict similar timber-framed façades and bustling scenes, likely influenced by buildings such as the Shakespeare Tavern on Prince Street or the Llandoger Trow Inn. Grunwell’s attention to period costume, signage, and transport (including horse-drawn carts) brings these vignettes vividly to life. This is an ideal set for collectors of vernacular architecture, British pub history, or anyone with a connection to Bristol’s old quarter. Each piece can be beautifully framed individually or grouped as a nostalgic homage to the city's timber-framed past.
