This elegant set of four miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell showcases Bristol’s blend of sacred architecture, historic community housing, and ancient city gates. Known for his precise brushwork and historic fidelity, Grunwell offers a quiet homage to the city’s lesser-known, yet deeply significant sites.
St Stephen’s Church, Porch View – Depicting the impressive Gothic entrance of one of Bristol’s oldest churches, located in the heart of the Old City. This deeply shadowed piece draws focus to the intricate stonework of the church’s porch, where many Bristolians have entered since the 14th century.
Arnos Court – This neoclassical structure was originally designed as a private mansion in the late 18th century and later became a convent, chapel, and cemetery lodge. Grunwell’s depiction highlights the building’s elegant symmetry and Georgian elegance.
Seafarers’ Almshouses, King Street, circa 1695 – Built to house aged or injured sailors, these Grade II listed almshouses reflect Bristol’s maritime heritage and philanthropic history. Their quiet, symmetrical layout contrasts beautifully with the lives of those they served.
St John’s on the City Wall (St John the Baptist) – This church is uniquely built into the old medieval city wall, with a distinctive gateway archway through which visitors once entered the city.
