About the Item

Title: Set of Four Miniature Watercolors of Maritime and Historic Bristol & Whitby by Jack Grunwell, 20th century British artist Medium: Watercolor on thin card, unframed Measurements (each): Approx. between: 2.75 inches (height) x 2.25 inches (width) and 2.25 inches (height) x 2.25 inches (width) Condition: Very good and highly presentable Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work in Bristol, England. Description: This evocative set of four miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell captures two of England’s most important maritime cities—Bristol and Whitby—highlighting both working harbours and iconic landmarks. Bristol Cathedral from Canon’s Marsh – Viewed across the water with rigged sailing ships moored in the foreground, this peaceful composition reflects Bristol’s layered identity as both a spiritual centre and working port. St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol – A striking portrayal of this soaring Gothic church rising behind a tall ship in Bristol Harbour. Once praised by Queen Elizabeth I as "the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England," its spire remains a dominant fixture of the city’s skyline. The Llandoger Trow Inn, Bristol – A historic and much-loved half-timbered building dating to 1664, the Llandoger Trow is steeped in maritime lore, said to have inspired Treasure Island and served as a meeting place for sailors. Grunwell depicts it in lively street activity with a ship moored just beyond. Captain Cook’s Endeavour at Whitby – A rare painting by Grunwell depicting Whitby, the famed Yorkshire port where Captain James Cook trained as an apprentice. The ship shown is the Endeavour, Cook’s vessel of exploration, here moored with the red-roofed town rising behind. Together, these works provide a cross-regional celebration of Britain’s coastal legacy, perfect for collectors of naval art, maritime history, or lovers of Bristol and Whitby’s historic charm.
