Title: Set of Three Miniature Watercolors of Historic Inns and Almshouses in Bristol by Jack Grunwell, 20th century British artist Medium: Watercolor on thin card, unframed Measurements (each): Approx. between: 2.25 inches (height) x 2.75 inches (width) and 3.25 inches (height) x 2.25 inches (width) Condition: Very good and highly presentable Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work in Bristol, England. Description: This evocative set of three miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell depicts historically significant inns and almshouses from the Bristol area. Rich with architectural detail and community history, the set celebrates sites of social gathering and charitable care, offering a nostalgic look at life in Georgian and Victorian England. Sailors’ Almshouses, King Street, circa 1700 – Built to house retired or infirm sailors, this Grade II listed almshouse complex is a rare surviving example of 18th-century maritime charity housing. Grunwell’s painting captures the neat symmetry of the façade, set against a soft sky and surrounded by passers-by in period attire. Blue Bowl Inn, circa 1830 – A traditional stone inn with Georgian windows and a weathered sign, this lively composition features townsfolk, riders, and figures gathered around the entrance. Inns like this served as rest stops, meeting places, and community centres in rural and town life across Britain. Swan Inn, Swineford – Located near Bath and Bristol, the Swan Inn is a countryside public house steeped in history. Grunwell places it beneath a canopy of greenery, with figures and horses creating a gentle bustle out front. The scene exudes charm, peace, and the welcoming nature of a rural inn. This set is perfect for collectors of British social history, pub and inn art, or architectural miniatures that document the everyday heritage of England’s built environment.
