This evocative watercolour by Jack Grunwell captures the 1708 expedition of Woodes Rogers, a key moment in British naval and exploration history. Two heavily armed galleons are depicted cutting through the sea under full sail, with dramatic rigging and crimson pennants catching the wind—an ode to the age of privateering and empire.
Woodes Rogers was an English sea captain, privateer, and later Governor of the Bahamas, famed for his round-the-world voyage which rescued marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk, the real-life inspiration for Robinson Crusoe. His 1708-1711 privateering expedition circumnavigated the globe and brought significant plunder from Spanish shipping, helping reassert British maritime dominance.
