About the Item

Jane Starks immerses herself in the history and archaeology of the places she loves to paint: wilderness areas of Texas, New Mexico, and Utah. The paintings are begun and completed on site, without photographs or preliminary sketches, in the media of gouache (opaque watercolor) and watercolor. About her work, Jane Starks states: "Wilderness as well as pockets of wilderness in urban areas draw me in. Through these paintings I want to capture empirically, not romantically, the truth of what I see and how I see it. They are specific to the season and time of day, as well as terrain and vegetation. I wish to deepen as well as heighten the sensations created by looking at a painting, to pull the viewer more intimately into the picture plane, and to create paintings that achieve a striking optical immediacy and reveal a supple painterly navigation between representation and abstraction—sense and nonsense. Illusion, the vehicle of painting, is a powerful lens to reality. I hope my paintings serve as a record of the solitude and beauty of the diminishing wilderness under our domain." Although Jane Starks was reared in California, her adult years were spent in Dallas where she raised two children. An MFA from SMU in 1999 followed degrees in archaeology from California State University at Long Beach and a Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. The paper size is 30 x 44 inches. The price is for the artwork, unframed.

Pines in Ravine
By Anne C. Weary
Located in Dallas, TX
“Anne Weary, who grew up as a Texas cowgirl, is at home in the outdoors and knows its ways and its language. There is a sort of very quiet but very powerful mysticism in her work, a sense of presence that goes quite beyond words,” wrote poet and University of Texas at Dallas professor Frederick Turner in the American Arts Quarterly. Dallas born Weary studied under Olin Travis, Octavio Medellin and Chapman Kelley before earning a 4 year certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with awards for excellence in drawing. In 2008, Weary left Texas for a three year sabbatical in Southern California where she began drawing in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve with red conté...

Moraine Valley, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, 20th Century
By Frank Wilcox
Located in Beachwood, OH
Frank Nelson Wilcox (American, 1887-1964) Moraine Valley, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, c. 1950 Watercolor on paper 19 x 24 inches Frank Nelson Wilcox (October 3, 1887 – April 17, 1964) was a modernist American artist and a master of watercolor. Wilcox is described as the "Dean of Cleveland School painters," though some sources give this appellation to Henry Keller or Frederick Gottwald. Wilcox was born on October 3, 1887 to Frank Nelson Wilcox, Sr. and Jessie Fremont Snow Wilcox at 61 Linwood Street in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, a prominent lawyer, died at home in 1904 shortly before Wilcox' 17th birthday. His brother, lawyer and publisher Owen N. Wilcox, was president of the Gates Legal Publishing Company or The Gates Press. His sister Ruth Wilcox was a respected librarian. In 1906 Wilcox enrolled from the Cleveland School of Art under the tutelage of Henry Keller, Louis Rorimer, and Frederick Gottwald. He also attended Keller's Berlin Heights summer school from 1909. After graduating in 1910, Wilcox traveled and studied in Europe, sometimes dropping by Académie Colarossi in the evening to sketch the model or the other students at their easels, where he was influenced by French impressionism. Wilcox was influenced by Keller's innovative watercolor techniques, and from 1910 to 1916 they experimented together with impressionism and post-impressionism. Wilcox soon developed his own signature style in the American Scene or Regionalist tradition of the early 20th century. He joined the Cleveland School of Art faculty in 1913. Among his students were Lawrence Edwin Blazey, Carl Gaertner, Paul Travis, and Charles E. Burchfield. Around this time Wilcox became associated with Cowan Pottery. In 1916 Wilcox married fellow artist Florence Bard, and they spent most of their honeymoon painting in Berlin Heights with Keller. They had one daughter, Mary. In 1918 he joined the Cleveland Society of Artists, a conservative counter to the Bohemian Kokoon Arts Club, and would later serve as its president. He also began teaching night school at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute at this time, and taught briefly at Baldwin-Wallace College. Wilcox wrote and illustrated Ohio Indian Trails in 1933, which was favorably reviewed by the New York Times in 1934. This book was edited and reprinted in 1970 by William A. McGill. McGill also edited and reprinted Wilcox' Canals of the Old Northwest in 1969. Wilcox also wrote, illustrated, and published Weather Wisdom in 1949, a limited edition (50 copies) of twenty-four serigraphs (silk screen prints) accompanied by commentary "based upon familiar weather observations commonly made by people living in the country." Wilcox displayed over 250 works at Cleveland's annual May Show. He received numerous awards, including the Penton Medal for as The Omnibus, Paris (1920), Fish Tug on Lake Erie (1921), Blacksmith Shop (1922), and The Gravel Pit (1922). Other paintings include The Trailing Fog (1929), Under the Big Top (1930), and Ohio Landscape...

High Country Summer, Original Painting
By Patricia Prendergast
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Patricia Prendergast began this pastoral view of the distant Sierra mountains by toning the whole paper with raw sienna watercolor. She lightly outlined the composition and then applied many layers of pastels. "Keeping in mind the works of some of my favorite impressionist artists, I allowed some of the raw sienna to remain visible throughout the painting," she says. "This resulted in the sky and ground planes feeling like a unified whole."

About the Artist
Pastel artist Patricia Prendergast creates impressionist artworks that depict the rivers and landscapes near her home in Sacramento, California. With each nature vignette, she captures the sense of larger natural rhythms through quick mark-making, mauve undertones, and a tranquil and serene haziness. Her work recalls the paintings from the Hudson River School such as Thomas Cole and Asher Brown Durand. Before working on her pastels at home in her studio, she spends hours studying nature on walks along the river near her home. Since becoming an artist, she says “everything is more vivid - the beauty of light and shadow in the trees, the subtlety of the color of clouds, the sparkle and reflections in water.” Her work as been exhibited in solo shows around California. She is represented by UGallery.
