About the Item

John Cuthbert Hare was an accomplished New England painter born in Brooklyn, New York. He began his artistic journey by studying commercial art at the Pratt Institute in New York City. His passion for art led him to further his education at the Art Students League in Manhattan and the Grand Central School of Art in NYC. After his studies, he found employment with the Hearst Newspaper Corporation. In 1933, John Hare married and began a period of exploration and artistic enrichment alongside his wife. The couple embarked on travels throughout the United States and Europe, which provided them with a wealth of inspiration and experiences to fuel their creative endeavors. Hare's affiliation with the Provincetown Art Colony on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, marked a significant phase in his career. This association earned him the moniker "Dean of Cape Cod Artists," underscoring his prominent role and influence within the region's artistic community. His contributions and dedication to his craft were recognized by his peers, cementing his place as a respected figure in the Cape Cod art scene. During his artistic journey, Hare's travels led him to St. Augustine, Florida, where he developed connections with the local arts scene. In 1935 and again in 1937, he visited the artists' colony in St. Augustine, leading to his eventual membership in the St. Augustine Art Association. Hare established a studio in the area, showcasing his commitment to his artistic pursuits. Hare's residence varied throughout his life, reflecting his nomadic spirit and artistic exploration. After his time in St. Augustine, he and his wife moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, circa 1938. Hare's creative pursuits took him to Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he focused on painting captivating coastal scenes that captured the region's essence. 7"x8" painting - 14"x15" including framing
