About the Item
Beautiful mid-1930's watercolor landscape of a vast valley with a rainstorm far in the distance by California artist Leslie Bruner Wulff (American, 1890-1968). The atmosphere and feeling of an approaching storm are captured with soft, flowing watercolors in this small yet powerful piece.
This watercolor was submitted for entry in the San Francisco Society of Women Artists Thirteenth Annual Exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1938. The original tag with artist information and title "Approaching Storm" is affixed to verso.
Signed "Leslie B. Wulff" lower left, and on verso.
Displayed in a new mat, with original rustic wood frame and plexi-glas.

Leslie Bruner Wulff was born in California on June 25, 1890. Leslie was the wife of Fred Wulff. During the 1930s she was active on the Monterey Peninsula where she painted landscapes of the area in oil and watercolor. She died in Rheem, CA on April 11, 1968. Exh: Carmel AA, 1930s; Kingsley Art Club (Sacramento), 1933-47.

Leslie Bruner Wulff
Leslie Bruner Wulff was born in California on June 25, 1890, and was active on the Monterey Peninsula, where she painted landscapes of the area in oil and watercolor during the 1930s. She exhibited her art in the Carmel Art Association Gallery in the 1930s, as well as the Kingsley Art Club in Sacramento from 1933–47.

About this artist: Allen Tucker, was an architect and painter so influenced by Vincent Van Gogh that he was called "Vincent in America". (Gerdts 291) Robert Henri and Maurice Prendergast were also credited as having an influence on Tucker's brushwork and compositions, the latter decisively. However, as his painting evolved, he did not fit into any tidy slot for description and was known as an individualist not easily categorized in American art history.
Tucker was born in Brooklyn in 1866 and graduated from the School of Mines of Columbia University with a degree in architecture and took a job as an architectural draftsman in the architectural firm of McIvaine and Tucker, his fathers business. During that time, he studied painting at the Art Students League with Impressionist John H. Twachtman, but it was not until around 1904, when he was 38, that Tucker became a full-time painter, leaving architecture behind. Many of his early canvases were classically Impressionistic with poplar trees resembling those of Van Gogh and haystacks and corn shocks...
