Signed lower right, "Johnston" and dated 1981. Bearing exhibition label from 17th Pacific Grove Annual Watercolor Competition. A vibrant Modernist watercolor brimming with color and compressed energy. Born in California on May 26, 1907, Lucille Johnston settled in Glendale in the 1930's. She exhibited widely including at the California Watercolor Society, (1933). Johnston is listed in relevant art dictionaries including "Artists in California, 1786-1940" by Edan Hughes.

A fine, early 20th century watercolor landscape showing the the luminous sunset serenely reflected in a still lake with elegant, calligraphic grasses. Painter, illustrator, etcher and muralist, Karl Yens was born in Germany and first studied with Max Koch in Berlin and, subsequently, with Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. He was a successful active muralist in both Germany and Scotland before immigrating to the United States in 1901. After arriving in America, Yens continued to paint murals in New York City and Washington, D.C. before settling in Southern California where he lived and painted until his death in 1945. Cape Cod, a popular summertime destination, sits on the hook-shaped peninsula of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. After graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute and moving to San Francisco, Robert Morgan (American, 20th/21st Century) returned to Provincetown to study watercolor with the late Lee Boynton at the Cape Cod School of Art. He then began taking workshops at the Fine Arts Work Center with Jim Peters, Robert Henry and Gregory Amenoff, among others. He now sells his artworks through the Alden Gallery, opened by film writer and Banner Arts Editor Howard Karren and business partner, Stephen Syta, in 2007. Morgan’s subject matter is largely influenced by Provincetown, mostly consisting of men in relationship to the beach, the town and each other.
