About the Item

A mid-century, Modernist view of Chicago, seen in the evening with the lights of numerous buildings reflected in the still waters of Lake Michigan. Signed lower right "M. Backman" for Muriel Durgin Backman, titled verso "Lakeshore No. 3" and dated 1965. A powerful work by this notable California Modernist who exhibited with success from the 1930's through the 1950's at the Crocker Art Museum, the Kingsley Art Club, the Berkeley YWCA and the Santa Cruz Art League, among others. Muriel Backman is well-listed and her work is held in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Public Library.
