About the Item

Rafael Senet y Pérez (Seville 1856 - Madrid 1926) Venice, Doges Palace watercolor on cardboard, 35 x 50 cm Signed lower left: Rafael Pérez y Senet The work, a view of the Doge's Palace in Venice, is by the hand of Rafael Senet y Pérez, a painter and watercolorist active between Spain and Italy at the turn of the 20th century. Born in Seville, he attended at the main Andalusian center the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría, attending courses by esteemed professors Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano. After a brief stay in Madrid, Senet moved to Rome, where, under the guidance of José Villegas Cordero, he completed his studies and training.During his years in Italy, the Andalusian artist made several trips, especially to Venice, a city for which he had a great fascination. The iconographic theme of views of Venice recurs frequently throughout the Spanish artist's entire corpus. In this watercolor, the artist meticulously depicts the Gothic facade of the Doge's Palace and a section of the monumental riva degli Schiavoni. Senet, in his extensive series of views of Venice, often makes use of the watercolor technique, as can also be denoted with regard to the View of the Church of Saints John and Paul and the View of the Rialto Bridge. Generally, the medium of watercolor proves to be particularly in vogue with regard to nineteenth-century views of Venice: probably in the wake of William Turner's celebrated series from the 1840s, there are many artists, both Italian and foreign, who make use of this particular technique for depicting lagoon landscapes.
