Description:
This striking watercolor by Robert Lepine captures the Dolmen de la Pierre de la Fée, an ancient Neolithic burial site located in Draguignan, France. One of the most well-preserved dolmens in Provence, this prehistoric structure consists of large standing stones supporting a flat capstone, evoking a sense of mystery and historical significance. The composition is beautifully framed by a gnarled, weathered tree with twisting branches, adding a dramatic and organic contrast to the geometric stone formation.
Key Features:
Dolmen de la Pierre de la Fée: A historically significant megalithic tomb, believed to date back to 2500–2000 BCE, associated with local legends of fairies and ancient rituals.
Intricate Detail: The delicate watercolor technique enhances the texture of the weathered stone, aged tree bark, and the surrounding landscape, creating a dynamic and atmospheric composition.
Subtle Color Palette: Muted earth tones and soft blues bring depth and realism to the scene, while the background village and distant hills provide a sense of scale and place.
Timeless Appeal: An evocative tribute to Provence’s rich prehistoric heritage, making this an excellent choice for collectors drawn to historical landmarks, mythology, and ancient landscapes.
This masterful piece captures the mysticism and grandeur of one of France’s most intriguing prehistoric sites, offering a unique blend of archaeology, folklore, and natural beauty.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount.
A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
