Roger Lersy
New York

c. 1965

About the Item

This watercolor of New York City bursting with energy in the 1960s is typical of Lersy's colorful and exuberant style. His work combines mid-century Modern abstraction with subjects beloved by the Impressionists, including scenes of urban life and still lives that often feature musical instruments. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right. Roger Lersy (1920-2004) was born in Paris, in what was at the time a rather rough area near the Place Pigalle. His youth was marked by extreme poverty. Despite these early challenges, Lersy won a place to study art and music at the École des Arts Apppliqués. By 1946, when he first exhibited in Paris, Lersy had become one of the founders of the School of Paris’ New Graphic School. Lersy received the Prix des Amateurs d’Art in 1953, the Shell Prize in 1954, and the Grand Prize of the City of Marseilles in 1953. He travelled widely, including in France and to the US and Italy, with new surroundings providing him with new sources of inspiration. For more examples of works by Lersy, see our website - R.S. Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point of a bloom like a botanical illustration, each is recording its environment and time. A meditative connection to the wild land comes with observation and ecological awareness. I paint natural, organic imagery with a focus on mark-making and use of material transparencies. My work includes vegetative and topological forms and gestures using color as a vehicle to convey energy from nature. I create images of imaginary environments inviting viewers to visit.
