About the Item
'Dawn Lake (Blue Ridge Mountains)'
Original Artwork. Unframed
______________
The dawn is painting transient layered reflections in the water, shifting the softened space between where land meets sky. From a body of work that captures the sublimely ephemeral in spaces that inhabit the boundary lines between the elements. Expressed in these poetic paintings is the acknowledgement that in all things there is flux and balance: Between solidity and fragile freedom; In the sensual interplay of light and shadow; the enduring and the effervescent.
Mixed media on handmade 'Two River's' paper with a deckled edge.
Signed and dated in pencil
79 x 56 cm / 31 x 22 inches (unframed)

About the Artist
Sophia Milligan (b 1980) BA MA
Sophia is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is held in prestigious international private collections with exhibitions across the UK, USA and Europe.
"Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. Like the wind sculpted trees and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by this ancient raw environment. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice.'
Finding magic in the flux and balance in the nature of all things, my artwork explores fragile, fleeting moments of interdependent relationships: the sensual interplay of light and shadow; wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; virile life and peaceful dormancy; the enduring and the effervescent. It is in melancholy beauty flowing between shifting seasons, and in human narratives tangled among wild landscapes, that I find my inspiration. It is in the blurred boundaries between restless seas and stoic stones; where the solidity of the soil meets the freedom of the air; where temporariness is the only constant. As such, I enjoy working with a balance of control and freedom: discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters, and the unexpected.
We are all the stories of the journeys that came before, carrying with us ancient immutable connections whilst leaving our marks and memories in tangible traces across the surfaces of our travels. I weave into my work tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary processes.
I see beauty in the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Through photography, painting, poetry and drawing- with marks, mixtures, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze; I illuminate the ordinary, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation."

Sophia Milligan
Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. Sophia's works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago.

"Wolf Lake A-11, " Pastel Landscape signed by Jan Richardson-Baughman
By Janet Richardson-Baughman
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Wolf Lake A-11" by Janet Richardson-Baughman is a pastel drawing on paper. It is signed in the lower right and titled in the lower left, both in pencil. The work is framed and matted with a white acid-free mat board. Though it seems contrary to the title, the main focus of the image is not a lake, but a yellow and gold field of grass that leads to a distant dark green treeline. The cloudy blue sky meets the horizon, and perhaps the darker line of blue above the trees is the far-off lake. With its restrained palette of yellow, green, and blue, it creates a send of calm.
Art size: 22" x 22"
Frame size 36 1/4" x 36 1/4"
A move to an eighty-acre farm in Western Michigan from Detroit suited Janet Richardson Baughman to a tee. She and her three siblings loved country life, and relished the many humorous adjustments to their new surroundings. The one-room schoolhouse she attended, for example, contrasted sharply to her earlier city school. Sports programs had been fairly sophisticated in the city. Rural sports consisted of her teacher piling everyone in her car, including the trunk, and then driving the children to another one-room schoolhouse for games. When Janet reached the sixth grade, a chapter in American history closed because all of the one-room schoolhouses were annexed by the nearest cities, but that unusual educational experience is something Janet fondly remembers.
Growing up in a family that was very artistic, it is not surprising that Janet loved drawing. She and her brothers and sisters would make Christmas decorations for the Christmas tree and had ongoing art projects all year long. Her architect father was an artist in his free time. As the children have become adults, they are all involved in artistic endeavors from carving to sculpture.
Janet's high school years were spent riding and showing her horses. "That was my life," she says. Living on the farm allowed her freedom to indulge her love of animals including the dogs that were so special to her. Active in 4H, Janet became an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. She took no art classes in high school although she sometimes helped her father with drafting.
Starting college with the intention of majoring in speech and drama, Janet took an art class only because it was required. She found the art classes so appealing that she took one after another. Eventually, having taken every art class offered, the university had to design independent studies for her.
With her beloved horses back on the farm, Janet discovered a new passion, and that was ceramics. First working as a waitress during college to earn income, Janet later became a Student Assistant and lived at the Ceramics Studio. As an assistant, she would make clay and glazes, fire the kiln, and assist the instructor however she could. At first, she had planned to become a high school teacher, but she was encouraged to earn her graduate degree and pursue her artistic endeavors, in addition to teaching. Janet graduated in 1975 with a BFA in Ceramics and Weaving from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
Following her mentor's advice, she went to Indiana State University in Indiana for her graduate work where she studied under Dick Hay...
