Teen Landscape Drawings and Watercolors

A fabulously atmospheric watercolour and pencil painting by Frederick Joss FRSA (1908-1967). One of number created whilst Joss was on a painting trip in India in 1954, many of which were published in the magazine 'East and West' in October of that year. A copy from the publication is attached to the back. A beautifully loose sketch by a master of his craft. In deft strokes Joss captures the very essence of the moment, the scene before him. This is a view of the Holy Jumna River (or Yamuna) which is a tributary of the Ganges running through Delhi. It depicts worshippers in white robes sitting at the river's edge and scattering petals on the waters. Further out, a herd of buffalo are being taken through the water. It is signed lower left 'Joss' and also has a label verso with the title The Worshippers plus a Gallery label 'Worshippers and Buffaloes in the Holy Jumna River, Old Delhi'. Also attached a sheet printed from the magazine with one of Joss's other sketches and part of his accompanying article. Painted on buff paper and laid to card. In excellent original condition. No mount marks etc. Measures 43 x 28.5cm plus a small border surround. From a private collection of watercolours and limited edition signed prints of India by leading early to mid 20th Century Newspaper artists who worked in the Sub-Continent. Fred Joss Biography Frederick Joss was a caricaturist, cartoonist, author and adventurer, born Fritz Josefovics in Vienna. As a young man he travelled extensively through Europe, drawing all the way. Travelling to the Americas, at the tender age of 19 he became editor and cartoonist of a local newspaper in Rio de Janeiro but after a short period was expelled from the country for his political views. After a brief period in a Spanish jail he returned to Vienna where he worked on the Anti-facist daily paper ' Weiner Post'. In 1933 he fled to Britain and was soon after appointed Cartoonist and current affairs caricaturist for The Star, one of London's daily newspapers. His 'Sketches' and 'Daily Round by Joss' became extremely popular earning him the name 'Joss of the Star'. At the same time he worked for British Intelligence, translating German broadcasts. In 1942 he joined the Royal Artillery as a gunner, where he created a new pseudonym - that of 'Denim' whose cartoons on war appeared in The Star. He finally left The Star in the mid 50s, working freelance and travelled for an extended journey in India. An exhibition of this work was held in Bangalore in 2014, the Leger Gallery in Paris and another at the Coningsby Gallery of Fitzrovia in 2019 but generally it is very rare to the market.
