Violet Hilda Drummond
Violet Hilda Drummond was born in London. Drummond's father was killed at Ypres in 1914 whilst fighting with the Scots Guards. Brought up by her mother and her two sisters, she was educated in a private boarding school in Eastbourne and at Le château de Vitry-sur-Seine, a Parisian finishing school. Drummond lived in India and studied briefly at St Martin's School of art. She returned to London after she got married and started writing and illustrating children’s picture books. The most notable among them was Miss Anna Truly in 1945 and her Little Laura series from 1960 onwards. She also produced cartoons for the BBC. Mrs Easter and the Stork published in 1957 by Faber & Faber was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal. Tiring of writing children’s books, she took to painting watercolors of London street scenes which she sold in galleries in London and which have remained popular ever since.
