About the Item

Beautiful early 20th-century nocturnal figurative landscape attributed to the prolific pastel artist William Henry Chandler (American, 1854-1928). This dramatic, expansive horizontal landscape depicts a small figure kneeling in a tipi tent beside a campfire under tall evergreen tress, beside a calm lake under the light of a full moon, with majestic snow capped mountain peaks in the distance. Unsigned / Possible illegible signature lower left. Presented in a period giltwood frame. Image size: 17.5"H x 39.25 *Attribution note: This piece is attributed to William Henry Chandler because its style, subject matter, composition, time period and size are consistent with the artist's works. Although it does not have a legible signature, it has been authenticated by an expert collector of Chandler pieces. The last image shows examples of other Chandler works that are of a similar nature. One of seven children born to Asa Byram Chandler, they lived in Elizabeth NJ, East Orange NJ, and Summit NJ as he was growing up. William displayed an interest in art during his youth but had other interests as well. As a young man Chandler moved to Chicago and obtained artistic work as a cameo engraver in a pearl button manufacturing business. He became to be known as a prolific and accomplished pastel artist in New York City. Living in New Jersey and working from his studios in New York City, Chandler was a deeply religious man who created primarily landscape scenes. He also paints fruit and dead-game still life, seascapes and occasionally some foreign scenes. And not all "Chandler" pastels were created by Chandler's own hand. Rather, at the peak of his business, orders were sometimes so numerous that Chandler employed a stable of artists who created a large number of "original" pastels in the style of Chandler, who signed the "Chandler" name to them, and who sold them through the Chandler Studios. Most Chandler pastels were signed "Chandler" either by Chandler himself, or one of his staff artists. And frequently Chandler pastels left the studio unsigned. Often when sold in pairs, only one pastel of the pair would be signed.
