About the Item
A rare and exquisite gouache and watercolor painting of Jane Marnac by renowned Art Deco artist Charles Gesmar. The artwork features a topless Jane Marnac in an elegant, oversized hat as the central figure, set against a backdrop of a lively black-tie party. The composition cleverly revolves around the tilt of her hat, drawing the viewer’s eye to her captivating gaze, pearl necklace, red fingernails, and delicate lace collar. A true masterpiece that captures the glamour and spirit of the Art Deco era.
Gesmar had a very short but successful artistic career prior to his tragic death from pneumonia. He designed for Mistinguett, creating costumes as well as many other commissions for the theatres of the day in Paris. He worked with posters and is thought of as a talent equal to Leon Bakst, his graphic designs linking the works of Toulouse Lautrec and Rene Grau. His works reflects the Jazz Age perfectly.
Jane Marnac was a Belgian stage and film actress. Predominantly working in Paris, Marnac sung in numerous stage productions such as Au temps des valses by Noël Coward at the Apollo in 1930. Marnac also appeared in several films such as The Darling of Paris in 1931.
From surviving prints, posters and drawings, it is acknowledged that Charles Gesmar created posters and costume designs for Marnac on at least 3 occasions.

Charles Gesmar
Charles Gesmar (born Geismar), known as Gesmar, was one of the designers of costumes and posters during the golden age of the Paris music hall during the Jazz Age and was primarily renowned for his work for the Parisian star Mistinguett. Although his tenure was short, his output was prolific, and his creativity and talent unrivaled at the time. Gesmar’s costumes and graphics caused as much excitement at the time, as shown a few years earlier by the elegance of Leon Bakst’s Ballets Russes. The seductive and sophisticated elegance of his art influenced generations of graphic designers, and he was indisputably a bridge linking the works by other two great artists who worked for the Moulin Rouge, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and René Gruau. Gesmar allegedly died of pneumonia in February 1928, before his 28th birthday.
