About the Item
The work is titled "The Bathers" and is signed at the lower right "CARENA. "The scene depicts a natural setting in which two naked maidens are chatting as they are about to bathe; besides them, the only other figure present is a dog that appears to be sleeping on the right. This is a subject much loved by the artist, who took it up often, especially in the 1930s and 1940s, a period to which our watercolor can also be attributed. The technique is watercolor on paper and the measurements without frame are 32 x 24 cm, with frame 50 x 41.5
Felice Carena was a Piedmontese artist, born in the province of Turin, who trained at the Accademia Albertina, where he attended Symbolist poets such as Arturo Graf and Giovanni cena. From 1902 he settled in Rome and became one of the most important exponents of Roman secessionism, with a style that mixed symbolism with Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics and decomposed painting typical of the pointillism of Segantini and Previati.
after his Roman experience he lived for some time in Florence, teaching at the Accademia, and then moved to Venice where he remained until his death.
