About the Item

Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the best-known and most intriguing artists from the "Painters Eleven" group. Town's reputation was established in the late 1950s with a series of mysterious unique prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included collage elements. In 1956, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale with these works. Over the following decades, the artist continued to reinvent his aesthetic, regularly changing medium and mood. This intimate line drawing, from the last chapter of the artist's career, features a group of four women, their graceful figures brought to life through smooth, curvilinear lines that accentuate the gentle curves of their bodies. It is both evocative of Ingres and Matisse for the simplicity and sensuality. Remarkably pared down, this drawing offers a look at Town's incredible ability as a draftsman. His confident and stylized linework is bold yet met with an air of restraint, making this work an excellent example of his innate creative intuition. Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York). Two Nudes, USA, circa 1930s Signed in ink by the artist Pen and ink on paper
By Louise Nevelson
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) stands as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. She is renowned for her monochromatic sculptural wooden constructions. However, it is important to emphasize that Nevelson toiled and experimented for nearly 30 years before arriving at her signature style, and overdue success, in the late 1950s. In recent years there has been an increase in scholarship, awareness, and collector interest in Nevelson's early work, as she was an early adopter of modernism in America. This drawing is a fine example from this era. After Nevelson divorced in 1931, she was finally liberated to devote herself to art-making. She studied at the Art Students League in New York and made several influential trips to Europe where she began studying with Hans Hoffmann...

Adam and Eve
By Salvador Dalí
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is Surrealism's most accomplished and iconic practitioner. His work is eccentric, elaborate, and mysterious, with an avant-garde style that explores the depths of consciousness and dream-like states. Prolific and endlessly inventive, Dali worked in almost every possible artistic medium; film, sculpture, photography, fashion and of course painting. Some of his earliest etchings date to the 1930's, as he worked in the graphic arts at the beginning of his career. "Adam & Eve" comes from a series called "Our Historical Heritage." The portfolio depicts eleven events and historical figures from the Hebrew scriptures (the Torah or Old Testament), including Noah's Ark, Joseph, Moses, and more. This portfolio emphasizes Dali's influence by religious themes, and is created with his signature mastery and style. This etching depicts the pivotal moment in the biblical story, when temptation strikes Adam and Eve, as they sit in the Garden of Eden and are lured to the lustrous forbidden fruit hanging from the tree of knowledge. Eve's hand wraps around the apple while Adam's reaches for it, as the serpent watches...
