About the Item

Watercolour and pencil on paper, 76cm x 51cm, (87cm x 61cm framed). Born in London to his renowned artist mother Elisabeth Frink RA and a French architect father, Michel Jammet, Jammet grew up surrounded by art and spent some of his early childhood in France. His parents were close friends with Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden, and he went on to do printmaking with Trevelyan in the 1970s. He studied at the Chelsea school of art 1975-7 and had his first one man show in London in 1990. In 1993 he collaborated with Curwen Chilford on two lithographs which held very true to his drawings. They were first drawn onto textured polyester as were all his subsequent colour prints. In 1994 he began an extended period of printmaking with Gresham studios where he turned his attention to screenprinting and etching. A very talented and ambitious draughtsman which comes across in his printmaking and this watercolour, Jammet had the ability to capture incredible movement and tone in his figures and animal prints. Poetic qualities, historical context and strength are paramount themes in his work.

Plummer trained at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1950s, championed by Stanley Spencer and Sir Herbert Read, he was the recipient of the coveted Leverhulme Scholarship. Charcoal on paper, 56cm x 38cm, (79cm x 60cm framed). Provenance: The Artist’s sister. From the mid-1940s to the early 1950s Colquhoun was considered one of the leading artists of his generation. Along with that of Robert MacBryde, another artist and Colquhoun’s partner, his work was regularly shown at the Lefevre Gallery in London. This early work is likely to be a drawing from when Colquhoun was at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1930s. Known as the ‘Two Roberts’, Colquhoun and MacBryde met at the Glasgow School of Art in 1932 and lived together until Colquhoun’s death in 1962. The pair also exhibited in several group shows at the Lefevre Gallery, including one in February 1946, alongside Ben Nicholson, Graham Sutherland, Bacon and Freud. Works were bought by the Arts Council, the British Council, the Contemporary Art Society and the Imperial War Museum. Signer upper right, 'Craemer' for Kurt Craemer (German, 1912-1961) and dated 1954. Born in Saarbrucken, Craemer first attended the Academy of Cologne where he worked under Friedrich Ahlers-Hesterman in 1928. He then traveled to Paris with his teacher, where he was introduced to the work of Henri Matisse. From 1930-33, Craemer lived in Düsseldorf where he continued his studies at the Art Academy under Paul Klee.
