About the Item

Marcel GROMAIRE (1892-1971) Female nude, 1956 Black ink on paper Signed and dated upper left Dimensions of the work : 25 x 32,5 cm frame : 40 x 50 cm Born in 1892 in the Nord region of France, Marcel Gromaire trained as a lawyer before attending artists' studios in Montparnasse, including the Académie Ranson, from the 1910s onwards. He was mobilised during the war and wounded in 1916. He expressed the violence of this experience through his work, in particular through the publication of drawings in the magazine "Le Crapouillot". Influenced by Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger and above all Henri Matisse, from whom he received advice, Marcel Gromaire had no master and did not belong to any school. He developed his own style, a characteristic geometric figuration inspired by medieval, Romanesque and Gothic art. The lines are pure, the construction rigorous, the perspective traditional. This distinctive style is reflected in the various techniques he used, including oil, engraving, illustration and tapestry. Very attached to the subject, his art was classical and realistic, in opposition to the abstraction that was developing at the time. He painted the modern city, men and the female nude. During these years, he was supported by Docteur Girardin, who acted as his patron. On Girardin's death, 78 pieces by Marcel Gromaire from his collection were bequeathed to the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. In 1937, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition, the State commissioned Marcel Gromaire to create a mural decoration for the pavilion of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. From 1939 to 1944, he was one of the leading figures in the renewal of tapestry in Aubusson, alongside Jean Lurçat. His undeniable fame led him to become a professor at the École des arts décoratifs in Paris from 1950 to 1968. The work we present here is typical of this artist's output. Firstly in its subject, the female nude, which he was particularly fond of, and secondly in its style: a strict geometric construction from which emerges a discreet sensuality.

Anatomy of Man, Signed Graphite Nude Sketch on Paper, 19th Century French Artist
Located in London, GB
Graphite on laid paper, signed verso and paper watermarks and atelier stamp Image size: 23 ¾ x 16 ¾ inches (60.25 x 43.5 cm) Gilt Whistler frame Leon Bellemont Born on August 20, 1866, in the family home on rue du Grand-Cloître, Léon Bellemont studied from 1875 to 1883 at the Diderot college, where he was an excellent student. At the same time, he joined the municipal drawing school, where his exceptional predispositions were very quickly noted. In 1884, at the age of 18, Léon Bellemont left Langres to join Paris and its National School of Decorative Arts, then the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There, he followed the teaching of Léon Bonnat, a renowned portraitist, and obtained his first rewards and several prizes. It was in 1892, however, that his artistic career took off, with his first participation in the Salon des artistes français, where he exhibited until 1956. A landscape and impressionist painter, particularly impressing marine worlds, Léon Bellemont stayed more and more regularly in Brittany at the beginning of the 20th century, where he painted numerous paintings. His notoriety grew, as did the profits from his sales, and the State itself ended up placing a few orders with him. His work “The Breton Faith” was, for example, acquired by the museum in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Subsequently, always in search of inspiration, Léon Bellemont travelled extensively. He was in Bruges from 1907 to 1909, then traveled across France for several years participating in exhibitions. During the First World War, he settled in Algiers where he remained for several years. He then returned to Paris, worked extensively there and achieved great fame. A socialite, he frequented salons and regularly received his friends Jules Adler...
