This drawing is part of the "Nude in Interior" . This piece is rooted in a more grounded exploration of intimacy, space, and the human form within a personal or domestic setting.
The use of pencil and ultramarine tempera remains striking here, but within the context of the series, it becomes a way of exploring mood and atmosphere within a specific environment rather than reaching toward the mythological. The ochre paper, combined with ultramarine, suggests a play of light and shadow, evoking a warmly lit interior with cool shadows falling over the figure. The use of blue splashes could hint at abstracted spatial elements, such as curtains, windows, or reflections.
The Nude in Interior series likely focuses on how the human figure interacts with its surroundings, both physically and emotionally. Here, while the "interior" is not explicitly defined, the minimalistic framing suggests a boundary or architectural element (such as the curved arc resembling a canopy) that defines the figure's space. The tension between the abstraction of the blue tempera and the specificity of the nude figure allows the space to feel ambiguous and dreamlike. This aligns with the notion of the interior as both a physical setting and a psychological space.
The figure’s reclining pose exudes both vulnerability and ease, suggesting an intimate moment of reflection or relaxation within the privacy of an interior setting. The abstraction added by the blue splashes introduces an emotional complexity, as if the environment is not entirely stable or fixed—perhaps symbolizing fleeting thoughts, emotions, or memories tied to the figure’s experience within the space.
In this series, the title and context encourage viewers to think about the relationship between the body and its surroundings. The ochre paper could symbolize the warmth of an enclosed, secure space, while the dynamic ultramarine tempera contrasts this with hints of movement, imagination, or external influences seeping into the interior. The blue could represent light streaming through a window, emotional turbulence, or even the intangible quality of memories tied to a specific space.
While Neo Mythology emphasized universal archetypes, surreal hybrids, and classical allusions, Nude in Interior appears to narrow its focus to the deeply personal—exploring the relationship between the body, its environment, and the emotions that arise within contained spaces. The two series share stylistic similarities, such as the energetic linework and layering, but Nude in Interior feels more introspective and intimate in its thematic concerns.
Reframed within the Nude in Interior series, Dream takes on a quieter, more introspective resonance. It beautifully captures a fleeting moment of intimacy, where the human figure becomes both a focal point and a vessel for the surrounding space's mood and energy. The ambiguity of the abstract elements invites the viewer to imagine the interplay between memory, sensation, and physical space, making it a deeply evocative piece. This series provides a fascinating platform for the artist to explore how we inhabit and emotionally connect with the spaces around us.
Artist Statement
"I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now.
As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space.
My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair.
Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy. My paintings are the opposite of objectifying a woman’s or a man’s anatomy. Painted works, featuring female nudes and a also men nudes, in a reversal of the male-artist/female-muse pattern, validate the feminine experience, defining myself through it.
I was interested in how one experiences the body in a sensual form, and later focused on my own body, as I experience it myself, looking into the mirror and reconnecting.
My work challenges the tradition of the nude by capturing my point of view, the gaze of a female painter, by using photography, drawings, sketches, and painting on canvas, for, both physical and psychological exploration.
My art tries to create a visual language for emotion, beauty, feelings of intimacy and in the same time autonomy, captured with paint and vivid colors. My intense interest in color and the gestures of the brush strokes are the means I see and convey the subjects in space, as living, passionate beings."
