About the Item

"Seated Nude with 'X'" is a conté crayon drawing on paper by the American artist Sandra Sweeney (1947 - 2017). The figure study captures an intimate and candid moment: In the image, a nude lady reclines against assorted blankets, her gaze deferred to her right. Though in a relaxed pose, she clasps her left heel, adding tension to the scene. Sweeney's loose but elegant handling of line captures the volume and weight of the woman's body, giving the impression of being before the model herself. Indeed, 'impression' is an apt word here — "Seated Nude with 'X'" is reminiscent of the drawings of such Impressionist masters as Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas. Sweeney signed this drawing in the lower right corner with a simple 'X'. 23.75 x 18 inches, artwork 32.75 x 27.75 inches, frame Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag silk-lined matting, a gold fillet, and housed in a gold finished wood moulding. Though she and her family spent a few years in Oregon, Sandy was based in Milwaukee, WI. Along with being a talented artist, she was a superb framer and worked as the head framer for the David Barnett Gallery in Milwaukee, WI.
