Ce portrait d’une jeune femme au visage doux et mystérieux, portant une coiffe d’inspiration médiévale, illustre parfaitement le style d’Edgard Maxence. Les traits du modèle rappellent ceux de certaines figures féminines présentes dans ses œuvres emblématiques, telles que "Femme à l’orchidée" ou "Fleurs du lac", toutes deux réalisées en 1900. Il pourrait s’agir de Jeanne Job-Bardou, modèle identifié du premier tableau, qui fut repris pour l’affiche pour le papier à cigarettes Job.
Edgard Maxence, exposant régulier au Salon des artistes français depuis 1894, connaît un vif succès au tournant du siècle. Son univers singulier, marqué par le symbolisme, s’inscrit dans la lignée de Gustave Moreau, son maître, et des peintres préraphaélites, dont il partage le goût pour le mystère et le rêve. Ses "Fleurs du lac" lui valent d’ailleurs la médaille d’or à l’Exposition Universelle de 1900. Artiste aux multiples facettes, Edgard Maxence explore une grande variété de techniques : l’huile bien sûr, mais aussi l’aquarelle, le pastel, le fusain, la gouache, la cire ou encore la tempera. Dans ce dessin, l’usage de la craie blanche donne au visage du modèle une pâleur presque irréelle, renforçant son aura fantasmagorique.
L’œuvre porte une dédicace à Frédérique de Faye, pianiste et compositrice bretonne née la même année qu’Edgard Maxence. Celui-ci manifeste un intérêt profond pour la musique, qu’il intègre fréquemment dans ses compositions à travers des représentations de musiciennes ou de chanteuses.
