Enrico Reffo
Head of a Monk – Preparatory Study, Atelier of Enrico Reffo

About the Item

Head of a Monk – Preparatory Study, Atelier of Enrico Reffo Charcoal on paper with light watercolor wash Size: 45 x 37.5 cm Turin, late 19th – early 20th century Sheet from the Turin atelier of Enrico Reffo, a central figure in Piedmontese sacred art. The drawing shows the head of a monk in profile, tonsured, with a resolute gaze turned upward—as if facing a divine presence. It is most likely a study for a figure within an altarpiece or wall painting, searching for the right expression of spiritual focus and inner strength. The light watercolor wash helps detach the figure from the background, and the precise, restrained hand confirms the connection to Reffo’s studio, or to artists trained under his guidance, such as his pupil Guglielmino. The sheet shows slightly irregular edges and a few minor spots, consistent with its function as a working study and its origin within a 19th-century painter’s workshop.
