Study sketch for the head of a saint - Enrico Reffo (Turin, 1831-1917)
Charcoal on paper with light watercolour wash • approx. 41 × 37 cm
Preparatory drawing from the studio of Luigi Guglielmino, pupil and heir of Reffo's atelier, where many of the master's drawings were preserved. The saint's face, shown in three-quarter view, is rendered with confident technique: Reffo alternates strong, clear strokes with softer, more nuanced transitions, moving fluidly between different registers. The light watercolour background highlights the figure without overwhelming it.
Enrico Reffo was among the leading interpreters of religious drawing in Italy during the late 19th century, author of frescoes and altarpieces in many churches across Piedmont and Liguria.
