About the Item

This beautifully executed drawing fits squarely within Twitchell’s broader body of mural-related works. He is celebrated for meticulously crafted preliminary drawings that serve as blueprints for his large-scale, photorealistic murals across Los Angeles. This is a pencil study done for a mural on a proposed new mission building which was planned for downtown Los Angeles in 1992 (to be located on 34th Street). The Mission was never built, but drawing does relate to his 111th Street Jesus project. Kent Twitchell is a pivotal figure in the history of Los Angeles muralism, renowned for his monumental, photorealistic portraits that adorn the city’s urban landscape. Beginning in the 1970s, Twitchell became a central artist in the contemporary mural movement, using the vast, often neglected walls of Los Angeles as his canvas. His works, such as the Freeway Lady, the Harbor Freeway Overture, and his series of portraits of anonymous and well-known Angelenos, brought a bold, human presence to the city's architecture. Twitchell's murals are not only technically masterful, often based on detailed preparatory drawings and studies, but they also reflect a deep commitment to public art as a form of cultural storytelling. Despite setbacks—including the unauthorized destruction of some of his murals—Twitchell has remained a passionate advocate for the protection and restoration of mural art in Los Angeles. His ability to render both iconic and everyday figures with reverence and realism has made his work emblematic of the city’s visual identity.
