About the Item

Study for the Head of a Monk Attributed to Enrico Reffo Charcoal and white chalk on ochre-toned paper Size: 39 x 32 cm Italy, late 19th - early 20th century This drawing belongs to the same group of studies originating from the Turin atelier of Enrico Reffo, where the artist and his pupils produced heads and figures for large-scale sacred compositions, including frescoes and altarpieces. In this case, the lowered gaze of the monk, turned toward the divine, conveys a deep and humble sense of devotion, evoking a meditative, spiritual context. The ochre paper, slightly rippled at the edges, serves as a tonal base from which the lights emerge through masterful use of white chalk. The stroke is restrained yet confident, and the drawing demonstrates a remarkable control of anatomical structure and psychological expression. A few minor marks and a crease at the corner bear witness to the sheet's actual use in the studio. The drawing was preserved in the atelier of Reffo's direct pupil, Guglielmino, who kept many archival materials from the master's workshop.
