About the Item
'Shelter in Place' is an original work of art from Kenyan born African-American artist Stephen Namara, who is widely known for creating paintings and masterful drawings created with oil, watercolor, pencil, conté crayon, and dry powder pigments. He has been exhibiting in the U.S. since 1980. Namara’s artistic abilities and his involved research into his subjects have enabled him to produce a highly acclaimed body of work that is held in major corporate, state, and university collections, and he is the recipient of numerous, important drawing prizes. Namara’s portrayals of people are not so much “portraits”, as they are “anti-portraits”. In an ongoing act of self-discovery, the artist instinctively makes his works by universalizing and abstracting humanity, rather than attempting to capture any single individual. According to the artist, a good work of art goes “beyond the line”. It is conscious, refers to art history, and makes one ask themselves, "what does this mean?” While a really good work of art forces one to consider things beyond the work itself.
Here are the artist's thoughts on the work: "About the "coronavirus" painting: the title is "SIP" (shelter in place). The coronavirus lockdown has forced many of us to reflect deeply on how we respond to solitude, although today, with constant access to telephone, television and internet we are never fully cut off from the rest of the world. Silence has become such a scarce commodity that many people become uneasy without an undercurrent of noise."
