A truly beautiful portrait of an older woman taking a quiet moment to read a book at her bureau. She is clearly a woman of high standing shown in her richly textured clothes: satin ribbons, lace shawl and a velvet bodice and skirts. Her tight ringletted hair was a style popular in the 1880s but as she is an older woman this is probably a style she carried through her life, dating the painting around 1880 instead.
