Portrait of Man with Shovel

c.1865

About the Item

This painting depicts a man standing confidently with a shovel. This is an American School, likely Hudson River School drawing from the 1860s or 1870s. This 19th century unsigned painting comes matted and framed! The detail in the shading and lines of his facial expression and his clothing are very well done and the artist truly captures the character of the man through just his stance and expression. The shadowing and shading around him truly emphasizes the character very well. Although this is a thinner painting, the artist skill transcends its size! This Hudson River School drawing is very unique and well done for not knowing the exact artist. This piece is in excellent condition and has impeccable detail and character.

Compared to other indian portraits in tribal regalia, King's rendering of John Ridge appears to be different. King portrayed John Ridge in Anglo-American clothing, sitting at a desk with a document and pen in hand—hinting at Ridge’s education and career as tribal leader and politician. King was known for his realistic and sensitive renderings of his sitters, and his ability to capture their physical features and attire with dignity and attention to detail.
