Provenance: Private Collection, Denver, Colorado
About the Artist:
Elisabeth Spalding, born in 1868, moved with her family to Denver in 1874, where she became a central figure in Colorado's artistic community. Her artistic journey took her from the halls of Wolfe Hall in Denver to the prestigious Art Students League in New York, where she studied under renowned American artists like Childe Hassam, John Twachtman, and Kenyon Cox.
Throughout her life, Spalding developed a distinctive style, blending post-impressionist techniques with a passion for capturing the natural beauty of Colorado. Her work often focused on the state's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant still lifes, featuring indigenous flowers. She was especially noted for her skill with watercolor and was a member of prestigious art societies like the New York Water Color Club, where she was one of the few women artists from the West to be recognized.
In addition to her accomplishments as an artist, Spalding was a founding member of several influential art organizations, including the Denver Artists Guild and the Le Brun Art Club. Throughout her career, she exhibited widely and was instrumental in the development of Denver's art scene, contributing to the foundation of the Denver Art Museum. She was awarded numerous honors during her lifetime, including the City Club of Denver's medal for Distinctive Achievement in Painting in 1943.
Spalding’s works are housed in several prominent collections, including the Denver Art Museum, The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and the Pioneers Museum in Colorado Springs. Her dedication to both art and education continues to inspire generations of artists and art lovers alike.
Elisabeth Spalding’s "Little Garden Flowers" is a timeless work that showcases her profound understanding of nature's beauty and her skill in translating it into watercolor. Whether you're an admirer of Colorado's landscapes or a collector of historic American art, this piece is an exceptional addition to any collection.
