About the Item

Raoul Victor Maurice Maucherat de Longpré (1843-1911). Born in Lyons, France to a family associated with flower painting. His father, Jean Antoine, decorated fans and exhibited floral still life paintings in Paris and Lyons. Raoul began drawing at a young age. By the time he was twelve he was earning a living painting flowers on fans for a firm in Paris. Raoul’s brother, Paul, is a well-known French/American still life artist and is believed to be Raoul’s younger brother, both sons of Jean-Antoine-Marie-Victor and Marie-Therese Pinchaud de Longpré. Paul moved to the United States in 1890, settling in California. It appears that Raoul continued to live in France. At age 21, Raoul debuted at the Paris Salon of 1877. He exhibited a gouache of "Lilacs" and one of "Lilacs and Chrysanthemums," and at the 1880 Salon, he exhibited "Peonies and Lilacs." In the 1890s his paintings circulated in America, likely through the efforts of his brother, Paul. His works today are in museum collections including the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C., The Fleischer Museum, California, Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, New York, Brockton Art Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, Fletcher Museum, Scottsdale, Arizona and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, PA, His superb floral watercolors evincing a high degree of scientific knowledge and decorative ability can be seen by his attention to a high degree of accuracy. Raoul's favorite flower was the lilac, which he often combined with roses or other blooms to formulate a still life. Aware of the symbolism in society and literature, Raoul’s use of white lilacs symbolized "youthful innocence," and when combined with roses, they represented "purity," "love" or "beauty." Depending on the color of the rose, a bouquet of red roses and white lilacs symbolized "youthfulness and first love." Measures: Sight size- 19.5" X 28
