About the Item
"Leaf Check" is an original piece by Sean 9 Lugo, known artistically for his murals and street art. The piece was debuted in Lugo's solo exhibtion "Storyteller" featuring city scenes from his childhood. This piece is made from acrylic and pen on mixed media panel and comes with a gallery-issued Certificate of Authenticity. The piece measures 26"h x 32"w and ships in the pictured white float frame.
"Leaf Check was a game brought across Palisade Ave, during the short-lived summer/fall seasons of 1992-1993. The premise of the game was that if you were out on the street, you always had to have a leaf in pristine condition on you. You would roam the street to find the perfect leaf littered among the gutter trash and carefully keep it in your pocket, or better yet laminated in plastic. It was essentially your pass to be on the street. If you didn’t have a leaf on you or the leaf was crinkled, you got beat up, feeling much like it was you against everyone else, in an anxiety riddled world. The reality of the game was that it just gave Union City kids an excuse to scrap with Weehawken kids, and once adopted by Weehawken, it gave an excuse for older kids to pick on younger kids." -Sean 9 Lugo

"Memory of Leaves, " Charcoal on Paper
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Applying his mastery of figurative realism to the natural world, he experiments with form and texture to uncover the intangible spirits of trees.
This charcoal drawing entitled “Memory of Leaves” beautifully illustrates the branching form of a mature birch tree. Loosely drawn with informal, sketch-like linework, the tree is shown in the middle of winter, bare of leaves and white with frost. Surdo’s skillful placement of shadow illustrates the forking branches with incredible texture and effortless realism. The intricate play of light and dark is accentuated by the stark white background, a negative space that isolates the tree in space and time.
Restricting the composition to only a portion of the tree trunk, Surdo accentuates the tree’s abstract form, lingering on areas of unusual shape or texture. Seeking to convey the strong emotional response elicited by his initial encounter with the tree, Surdo focuses on the tree’s sculptural form, contrasting the strong trunk...

The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The vegetative environments invite viewers to visit a place. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These botanical paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages.
Throughout the long tradition of landscape painting, there exists a connection between the artist and the natural world. A painter can evoke this relationship through the use of color, value and line whether the painting is representational or abstracted. These elements combine and intertwine to create rhythms of perspective and dimension, illuminating this personal vision on canvas.
Yupo paper is waterproof, and stands up to the rigors of the elements and demanding environments. Ultra-smooth and bright white, it's a paper alternative that stands out.
