About the Item
This circa 1930 ink poster project, titled "Modes," is a striking representation of Art Deco fashion illustration. Hand-drawn in black ink and wash, the artwork captures the essence of early 20th-century elegance. The central figure—a woman seen from behind—wears a wide-brimmed hat and a stylish backless dress, embodying the refined glamour of the era.
The composition is bold and dynamic, with swirling, geometric patterns that create a sense of movement and modernity. The typography of "MODES", with its sculpted, shadowed letters, adds depth and reinforces the sleek, sophisticated aesthetics of the time. The shading techniques, including hatching and tonal gradients, showcase the artist’s skill in rendering texture and contrast through ink.
As a preliminary poster design, this piece was likely created for a fashion magazine, department store, or couture event. It reflects the era’s fascination with streamlined forms, luxury, and modernist visual language, key characteristics of Art Deco commercial illustration.
This ink project stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of early advertising and fashion design, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process behind graphic arts of the 1920s and 1930s. Its unfinished yet masterfully composed nature makes it a valuable and historically significant work of early fashion illustration.

View All1931 ink poster for the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris
Located in PARIS, FR
This original 1931 ink poster project was created as a concept for the Exposition Coloniale Internationale, held in Paris from May to November 1931. The striking black-and-white composition features a bold, angular depiction of a man in traditional North African attire, set against an architectural backdrop reminiscent of Islamic and colonial influences. The typography, arranged in a dynamic diagonal layout, gives the piece a sense of power and movement.
As a preliminary design, this ink project was likely part of a larger effort to develop the visual identity of the Exposition Coloniale, which was one of the most significant international exhibitions of its time. The exposition, hosted in Bois de Vincennes, aimed to showcase the cultural, economic, and artistic achievements of France’s colonial empire, with pavilions representing territories such as North Africa, Indochina, and West Africa.
The artwork's bold contrasts, dramatic perspective, and modernist style reflect the Art Deco and early 20th-century graphic design trends, emphasizing strong geometric forms and high-impact visuals. As a hand-drawn project, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind exhibition advertising, where artists experimented with layouts, typography, and imagery before finalizing a printed poster.
Today, this ink poster project is a historical artifact, offering insight into both colonial-era propaganda and vintage graphic...

The 1564 Medici Danti Map of California
By Fra Egnazio Danti
Located in New York, NY
Florentine, Probably Seventeenth Century
Titled
L’ultime parti note nel Indie occidentali
Dated on the edge of the cartouche: “M.D. LXIII. M.AG” [1564…the month of August]
In the 1560s Cosimo I de’Medici, the powerful Duke of Florence, undertook a major renovation of the Palazzo Vecchio, the venerable palace that to this day dominates the city at the Piazza della Signoria. For the Sala della Guardaroba, literally the wardrobe room, but in fact the storeroom of the Duke’s most precious holdings, Cosimo conceived of a grand decorative project that was to reflect in one space the entire cosmos --both an indication of the Duke’s ambition and an allusion to his name. The plan, supervised by Giorgio Vasari, involved the construction of walnut cabinets to contain the Medici treasures, on the outside doors of which were to be placed large hand-painted maps specially commissioned to document and illustrate the current knowledge of the world. Portraits of famous men were to decorate the tops of the cabinets and two large globes –one representing the terrestrial world, the other celestial—were to descend from openings in the ceiling. The commission for the maps, inspired by Ptolemy’s Geographia, was given to the celebrated mathematician and cosmographer, Fra Egnazio Danti (Perugia 1536-1585 Alatri). Fifty-three maps were ultimately created. Thirty were conceived and executed by Danti between 1563 and 1575. The remaining twenty-three were completed by Stefano Bonsignori between 1576 and 1686. They remain in place in Florence in the room for which they were created.
The present work is an exact-size painted, drawn and inscribed copy of Danti’s map of California...
