This painting challenges the observer’s vision: the vivid colour vertical lines interweave and superimpose in a downward directed movement. Many paradoxical impressions emerge from this pictorial oeuvre which changes depending on the viewer’s point of view. Kintsugi is the subtitle of Restrained Supersaturation No. 17. This is a traditional Japanese method. Instead of attempting to conceal the fault lines, it entails repairing the item by drawing attention to them with gold powder.
Experimentation is at the very heart of Ahn Hyun-Ju’s approach and is a part of every aspect of her work: supports, shapes, materials, colour association… Her abstract paintings, influenced by 1960s and 1970s American minimalism, refute any metaphorical language and all narrative intentions. They are a part of a pure aesthetic quest.

Ahn Hyun-Ju
Born in Seoul, Ahn Hyun-Ju has lived and worked in Germany for over twenty years. Her work bears the mark of her training in both painting and sculpture. Her abstract paintings, influenced by 1960s and 1970s American minimalism, refute any metaphorical language and all narrative intentions. Their composition is characterised by the contrast between simple and minimalist geometric shapes with deep, intense colours. Ahn Hyun-Ju has been featured five times in the collective exhibition “Die Grosse” at the Kunstpalast Museum in Düsseldorf and in the collective exhibition “Colore non solo”, presented at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005 and at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in 2006. “How difficult is it to see a thing as a thing itself and recognize the beauty of the being itself? A thing without being a medium of meanings and metaphors which are based in our convention?”
