Bryan David Griffith's work explores the idea that dualities—light and darkness, life and death, object and emptiness, forest and fire—aren’t opposed forces, but rather part of the same continuous cycle; one can’t exist without the other. He juxtaposes soft organic lines with geometric forms that convey our desire to compartmentalize and control capricious natural processes like wildfire, often with unintended consequences.
Griffith’s work spans photography, painting, sculpture, and installation, often using simple materials and equipment in unexpected ways. His work is held in public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; University of Michigan Museum of Art; Center for Creative Photography; and Fort Wayne Museum of Art. He has exhibited extensively throughout the US, with recent and upcoming solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Coconino Center for the Arts, and Mesa Contemporary Art Museum.

Bryan David Griffith
My work explores the idea that dualities—light and darkness, life and death, object and emptiness, forest and fire—aren’t opposed forces, but rather part of the same continuous cycle; one can’t exist without the other. I juxtapose soft organic lines with geometric forms that convey our desire to compartmentalize and control capricious natural processes like wildfire, often with unintended consequences. Each piece in Rethinking Fire is a precarious attempt to capture the ephemeral essence of fire by using fire itself to create paintings, sculptures, and installations. To create paintings, I burn petroleum—the most definitive and contentious commodity of our culture—in an open flame and hold a wooden panel coated with encaustic beeswax over the fire, accumulating the carbon from smoke in the molten wax over time. While my method is novel, artists have used these primal materials for thousands of years. This series grew out of a grant to develop work for a traveling exhibition about wildfire called Fires of Change, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. After spending many hours with scientists in burned landscapes, I saw first hand how by trying to protect our forests from death, we have inadvertently severed the cycle of life. I developed an appreciation for the power, beauty, and necessity of fire, and wanted to bring what I discovered in the forest to the gallery setting. In 2016, Griffith won the Flagstaff Arts Council’s Viola Award and the Phoenix Art Museum’s Artist Grant for his work on wildfire. His work is held in a number of permanent collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Phoenix Art Museum, University of Michigan Museum of Art, Center for Creative Photography, and Fort Wayne Museum of Art. His recent solo exhibitions include the High Desert Museum, Fresno Art Museum, Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Coconino Center for the Arts, and the Griffin Museum of Photography.

This reflective Chevron collage was de-accessioned by the Honolulu Museum of Art. In 2018, it was exhibited in the show "On Black Mountain: The Bauhaus Legacy in America", April 5, 2019-April 27, 2019 at the Sager Braudis Gallery in Columbia, Missouri, and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue.
Unique signed and dedicated mixed media collage with silver and colored foil on board by the important Color Field painter Kenneth Noland. It's quite a dazzling work, combining color field, geometric abstraction with Op Art, as the work changes appearance and color with the reflected and refracted light. - sometimes appearing light; sometimes darker. See the photos -- there's a light one and a darker one - and they both depict the same work. What's so impressive is that this work literally changes color depending on how the light reflects against it. The artist wrote a personal and heartfelt inscription on the verso to "Twig and Laila". (Twig (sic), which the artist deliberately misspells, is Thurston Twigg Smith, former publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser, who was married to New York philanthropist Laila Twigg Smith. Laila had lived in Hawaii since 1970, where she and her husband had put together a substantial collection of contemporary art. Unfortunately, the two divorced in 1996 and soon after she returned to New York. Two years later, in 1998, Laila died of liver failure at the young age of only 53. Laila was a major philanthropist and art collector who moved from Manhattan to Hawaii. She was a board member of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and a major donor the Honolulu Museum in Hawaii. Laila donated the present Ken Noland...
