About the Item

Ponte Sant’Angelo, Wrapped, Project for Rome - Christo, Contemporary, 21st Century, Collage, Limited Edition Collage on lithograph with acrylic frame Edition of 160 Arab and 90 Roman Signed and numbered, with Certificate of Authenticity In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher Among the various man-made and nature's creations, wrapping bridges has always been an important subject that Christo, but also together with wife and artist-collaborator Jeanne-Claude, marked the foundation of their most celebrated series (as Christo and Jeanne-Claude). Wrapping the Ponte Sant'Angelo has been a dream of the artist(s), as it is the oldest bridge in Rome and it also connects the Vatican with the city of Rome. Since their proposition submission to proceed with the installation in 1967, this project remains unrealized. "And for every project, because it takes years, you can see the early drawings and collages as just a simple, vague idea, and through the years and through the negotiations of getting the permit, you see that every detail is now clarified." — Christo Exploring the opportunities of wrapping a built-environment, the artist(s) offers the possibility to review it by applying a new appreciation of its form and volumetric qualities. Creating a layer of abstraction to a figurative and real environment. By applying fantasy to a real occasion, at a gigantic scale, the artist(s) puts the viewer at once in a life-time experience to unravel the metamorphoses of an object. CHRISTO Known as the power artists duo, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, created ephemeral environmental installations in urban and rural global locations. Christo and Jeanne-Claude (respectively, born June 13, 1935, Bulgaria—died May 31, 2020, New York, U.S.; born June 13, 1935, Morocco—died November 18, 2009, New York, U.S.) stand out for their environmental and sometimes controversial temporary outdoor installations, most notably the wrapping of world-famous architectonic icons like the “Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin”, 1995 or the project "The Gates, New York", which consists of over 7'503 steel gates with orange coloured fabric stretched acres 37 km of walkaway in Central Park. "The important thing to understand is that all of our projects have a nomadic quality, things in transition, going away, they will be gone forever. And this quality is an essential part of all our work. They are airy—not heavy like stone, steel, or concrete blocks. They are passing through." —Christo After Jeanne-Claude´s passing in 2009, Christo continued to carry out the couple’s proposed projects: “Big Air Package”, 2013 inflating an immense fabric dome within the cavernous Gasometer Oberhausen in Germany. As well as “The Floating Piers”, 2016 connecting two islands in Lake Iseo in Italy. These monumental works were seen not only by those that would visit the installations but also by passers-by. These works confront observers not only with its aesthetic properties but explore environmental, democratic, and humanist questions and it creating new ways of seeing familiar landscapes.

JR Au Palais De Tokyo, 28 Aout 2020, 16h12, Paris, France, 2020 Contemporary, 21st Century, Lithograph, Limited Edition Lithograph Edition of 180 70 x 100 cm (27.5 x 39.5 in.) Signed on the bottom right corner (stamp and lead), numbered on the bottom left corner Accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher The piece is offered unframed. Edition number might vary from what is shown in the images. The street artist and photographer JR started out his artist practice in the streets of Paris. Using the pseudonym JR, the artist is keeping his identity hidden from the public. As part of the "Jusqu'ici tout va bien", an exhibition by students from the Kourtrajmé school that JR is in charge of the art section of the school, JR created a pasting on the facade of the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, through an anamorphic image. The collage was visible from August until September 2020, between the buildings of Clichy-Montfermeil and the Eiffel Tower, whose shadow is outlined on the visual in anamorphosis. What is very characteristic of JR’s art is the impermanence nature of the project, which the only way that the installation is captured, is through the creation of this lithograph - commemorating its presence, as the sun dries the glue, and the wind and rain tears the fragile paper with every moment. JR JR is a photographer and artist whose identity is unconfirmed. After he found a camera in the Paris subway...

Christo The Pont Neuf Wrapped mixed media glue original fabric hand signed
Located in Paris, FR
Christo "The Pont Neuf Wrapped 1 " mixed media with original fabric signed. Image dimension 69X101 cm with frame 71X103 cm hand signed by the artist with a piece of the original fabric glued. Good condition Christo Vladimirov Javacheff (1935–2020) and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (1935–2009), known as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, were artists noted for their large-scale, site-specific environmental installations, often large landmarks and landscape elements wrapped in fabric, including the Wrapped Reichstag, The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Running Fence in California, and The Gates in New York City's Central Park.[1] Born in Bulgaria and Morocco, respectively, the pair met and married in Paris in the late 1950s. Originally working under Christo's name, they later credited their installations to both "Christo and Jeanne-Claude". Until his own death in 2020, Christo continued to plan and execute projects after Jeanne-Claude's death in 2009. Their work was typically large, visually impressive, and controversial, often taking years and sometimes decades of careful preparation – including technical solutions, political negotiation, permitting and environmental approval, hearings and public persuasion. The pair refused grants, scholarships, donations or public money, instead financing the work via the sale of their own artwork. Christo and Jeanne-Claude described the myriad elements that brought the projects to fruition as integral to the artwork itself, and said their projects contained no deeper meaning than their immediate aesthetic impact; their purpose being simply for joy, beauty, and new ways of seeing the familiar. On September 22, 1985, a group of 300 professional workers completed the temporary work of art The Pont Neuf Wrapped. They had deployed 41,800 square meters (450,000 square feet) of woven polyamide fabric, silky in appearance and golden sandstone in color, covering: The sides and vaults of the twelve arches, without hindering river traffic. The parapets down to the ground. The sidewalks and curbs (pedestrians walked on the fabric). All the street lamps on both sides of the bridge. The vertical part of the embankment of the western tip of the Île de la Cité. The Esplanade of the Vert-Galant. The fabric was restrained by 13 kilometers (8 miles) of rope and secured by 12.1 tons of steel chains encircling the base of each tower, one meter (3.3 feet) underwater. The "Charpentiers de Paris" headed by Gérard Moulin, with French sub-contractors, were assisted by the USA engineers who have worked on Christo and Jeanne-Claude's previous projects, under the direction of Theodore Dougherty: Vahé Aprahamian, August L. Huber, James Fuller, John Thomson and Dimiter Zagoroff. Johannes Schaub, the project's director, had submitted the work method and detailed plans and received approval for the project from the authorities of the City of Paris, the Department of the Seine and the State. 600 monitors, in crews of 40, led by Simon Chaput...
