X Marks the Spot: 1960s Mid-Century Modern Abstract Acrylic & Pastel Mixed Media

1960s

About the Item

"X Marks the Spot" is a striking 1960s abstract mixed media painting by 20th Century Denver artist Edward Marecak. Created using acrylic and pastel on paper, this captivating piece features bold colors of black, white, and purple, offering a stunning visual contrast. The painting is presented in a custom frame with archival materials, measuring 34 x 26 inches, with the image size being 29 ¼ x 21 ¼ inches. About the Artist: Edward Marecak was a dedicated artist and educator whose work transcended trends. Instead of seeking fame, he focused on teaching and fostering creativity in younger generations. His diverse body of work includes lithographs, monoprints, drawings, ceramics, wood sculptures, stained-glass windows, and jewelry. Marecak’s simple yet profound philosophies on art allowed him to create freely, without pressure from the art market. A native of Brunswick, Ohio, Marecak’s artistic talents were evident early on. He was hired by the National Youth Administration to document historic barns, and later studied lithography at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and Cranbrook Academy. After meeting his future wife, ceramicist Theresa Madonna Fortin, he began his career as an educator in the Denver Public School system, where he spent over 25 years. Inspired by Eastern European folk traditions, Marecak’s work is known for its vibrant color, bold shapes, and dynamic compositions. Influenced by the Carpathian tales of his childhood, his art embraces flat patterns and intricate, colorful designs. His later work increasingly embraced abstraction, creating vivid, textured forms that combined Byzantine and mosaic-like aesthetics. As Marecak said, “I am still very much a Byzantine designer, and my joy with what color can do grows all the time.” Marecak’s work was celebrated with a retrospective at the Kirkland Museum in 2007, cementing his legacy as one of Colorado’s leading modernist artists.
